I am thrilled to be able to share my drum circle journey with you.
In the summer of 2017, I visited the Circle of Rhythm’s community drum circle in Calgary, Alberta and from the moment I heard the drum call as I walked into the community centre, I was hooked! It was one of the most incredible uplifting experiences of my life and right there and then I said to myself, “I need to make this happen back home!”
I took my first level of Facilitator Training in October of 2019 when I attended the Integrated Community Drum Circle (ICDC) Facilitator Training with Circles of Rhythm in Calgary. I completed my second level of professional training with COR in November of 2022. I have a deep passion to bring this hugely successful drumming for wellness program to Steinbach, Winnipeg, and surrounding communities in Manitoba and to share the ICDC experience with as many people as possible.
When world events impacted 2020 and 2021, I expanded my training by completing the Jim Donovan Music and Wellness Leadership Training Program. I then developed thirty minute, one hour and two hour online drumming and sound health programs to reach participants easily in their homes and workplaces all around the country and the world!
I had music training in my youth, but I was not an experienced drummer until I started this journey. What I did have was extensive skill in running a small business, the Aries zeal for leadership and the desire to work with a healing modality that reaches all ages and abilities. I am a certified third level reiki practitioner, I have studied and practiced chi gong and tai chi and I have taught meditation classes for over ten years. I also have 40 years of experience working in the corporate world with various team sizes and dynamics. All of these valuable experiences came together when I was introduced to an ancient tool for healing and communication, the drum. I had found a unique and inspiring purpose to share the love of drumming and rhythm therapies with the world!
I now train regularly with various instructors to deepen and strengthen my hand drum knowledge and to understand the cultural history behind these beautiful instruments. I am excited to continue to follow the growing field of sound therapy for improved health. I have learned what many already know, that drumming is scientifically proven to boost brain health, reduce stress, aid with reducing depression and anxiety, and facilitates connecting people in community. Who among us has not needed help with one or all of these? Its easy to see why these are some reasons why community drum circles are incredibly popular around the world. Plus it’s a whole lot of fun!
I invite you to come along with me as I pursue my passion project, first to create a local community circle with people drumming together on a weekly basis and second to share this amazing drumming for wellness, healing experience with as many people as I can through programs offered with love, compassion, and inclusiveness. Take a leap of faith, step out of your comfort zone and come drum and experience sound healing with us!
